The River Ouse
                                                --- Gabrielle Everall

Virginia,
When the pigeon’s spoke to you in Greek
A language you said you did not know
Were they speaking of Eros?
Did you ask them to speak again?
Even though there is no begininng
Did this search for desire
drive you mad?
Did you see inside yourself
a river goddess?
Did you speak to the Naides
in the river Ouse?
It seems you could not escape
the winged ones
hallucinating a code
you were excluded from
as a girl
They were the beginning
of the end.
