Each Morning

--- Trevor Maynard

each morning

paws pad silently
she leans against my bare leg
it is morning, not feeding but snacking time
but before I break out the cat treats

a cuddle; warm fur against my face
true racing heart to my ear
she feels my need, my sadness
she calms my anxiety, my dread, my pain

the world out there
is cold, not only in the visceral sense
to the mind, to the intellect, to the heart
life is vital, yet cheap
callous maim and injury commonplace
the absence of care and love ubiquitous

so, I snuggle back into my cat
she calms me, emotionally supports me
in return I feed her kibble
tuna, and lactose free milk
grateful for her solicitude
