Monsoon

--- Pallabi Nandy

Fumes from the kettle

create a dark cloud of memories

looming over her

as she serves the beverage

to thankless hands.

The city engulfs millions of Sitas

every monsoon of their lives.

Purple, red, blue flowers

on their pale brown skin

nourished by crimson rain.

Pain, lust and pain again

the Sisyphean wheel churns

their hopes and love into dust

the same dust that gives rise

to more flowers

that bloom every monsoon

and we a shed a dry tear

and light a candle.
