Volume 1 No. 2

Theme:  Shadows

And generations pass, as they have passed,

A troop of shadows moving with the sun;

Thousands of times has the old tale been told;

                                                                                    (Longfellow: A Shadow)

In our journey through space and time we cast a variety of shadows; the umbra, the penumumbra, the antumbra. As long as there is light there will be shadows. Sometimes our shadow is oblong beside us, sometimes overhead, sometimes it falls in between:

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the shadow

                                                (Eliot : Hollowmen)

The material world has been perceived as a shadow of another world - the ideal world. Are we living shadows acting out a destiny already dreamed of? Shadows distort our structures of concrete universal reality. They tell a different story. In the end we shall all cast our shadows behind us. However colourful our lives are our umbra is always black.

Poetry that celebrates every aspect of life, creates a parallel world with black and white words. In her world too there are shadows falling across the pages, in between lines, growing around words and sometimes they walk out of poetry.

This issue of Teesta Review celebrates this shadow which is inseparable from you.
